Biden Admin Threatens To Sue Texas Over Barriers On Rio Grande Blocking Illegal Immigration

The Biden administration is requesting that Texas remove the barriers on the Rio Grande River, which were put in place by law enforcement officials to prevent illegal crossings.

The Department of Justice is threatening to sue Texas over "humanitarian concerns" if the barriers are not removed. According to the DOJ, the floating barrier poses risks to navigation, public safety, and presents humanitarian issues. They argue that it is unlawful for Texas to have installed these barriers.

In response, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas tweeted that the state will not be removing the barriers and is prepared to face the DOJ in court. Abbott asserts that Texas has the sovereign authority to defend its border, citing the U.S. Constitution and the Texas Constitution. He blames the Biden administration's open border policies for the humanitarian crisis and emphasizes that Texas is taking measures to protect both its citizens and the migrants risking their lives.

The buoy barriers, placed in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, spin if someone tries to grab onto them and were part of Texas' "Operation Lone Star" to address the consequences of President Biden's immigration policies. Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn defended the use of the barriers, claiming that the desperate measures were necessary due to the Biden administration's failure to secure the border.

Additionally, a canoe and kayak rental place owner has filed a lawsuit, arguing that the installation of these barriers will cause "imminent and irreparable harm" to his business.
