Democratic Strategist Sounds Alarm Over Biden's Poll Numbers
According to a recent Washington Post-ABC poll, President Joe Biden's approval ratings have reached a new low of 36%, following his announcement of running for reelection. The poll included 1,006 U.S. adults and was conducted between April 28 and May 3. The results revealed that Americans have a negative assessment of Biden as a candidate for reelection.
The poll also indicated that 54% of respondents believed former President Trump was better at handling the economy, while only 36% approved of Biden's economic strategies. Furthermore, only about one-third of Americans believed that Biden had the mental acuity required to do the job.
When compared to Trump, Biden fared poorly in respondents' assessments of being in good enough physical and mental health to serve as president. However, when it came to trustworthiness, Biden received more support than Trump.
The poll also showed that a significant number of independents who lean Democrat (77%) and Democrat-leaning adults (58%) want the Democratic Party to nominate someone other than Biden. The numbers were tied for those who believed the party should nominate Biden or someone else, with 6% having no opinion.
In a hypothetical 2024 general election matchup with Biden as the Democratic Party nominee, more respondents said they would probably or definitely vote for the Republican candidate than for Biden. In a Trump vs. Biden scenario, 45% of respondents said they would vote for Trump, and 38% would vote for Biden. In a DeSantis vs. Biden scenario, 42% said they would vote for DeSantis, and 37% would vote for Biden.
Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile expressed her concern over the poll results, stating that the coalition that elected Biden in 2020 is now fragmented. Brazile also emphasized that Democrats need to communicate a strong message to the American people, not just on their accomplishments but on where they want to take the country.
