NYC Mayor Eric Adams slams 'irresponsibility' of White House on immigration
On Tuesday, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams of New York City criticized the White House's handling of immigration, which he deemed "irresponsible."
During a press conference, Adams claimed that both political parties in Washington have failed to take appropriate action, and as a result, his city has taken on the burden of asylum-seekers. Adams emphasized that the issue was not with the asylum-seekers themselves, but with the lack of immigration reform from the Republican Party and the White House's inaction.
Adams' criticism of the White House came one day after he condemned Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott's plan to send asylum-seekers to cities across the nation. Adams called Abbott's actions "morally bankrupt" and accused the governor of targeting Black-run cities. However, Adams clarified in a later interview that he did not believe Abbott's actions made him a racist.
Adams pointed out that out of the 108,000 cities in America, Abbott chose to send asylum-seekers to five cities run by Black mayors: New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and Houston. This, according to Adams, demonstrates Abbott's use of the crisis to harm Black-run cities.
Sources told Fox News on Tuesday that the Biden administration had approved the deployment of 1,500 active-duty U.S. troops to the southern border in May to prepare for the end of Title 42. Title 42 is a public health order implemented in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing the government to rapidly expel migrants who may pose a health risk.
Adams' criticism of the White House's handling of immigration aligns with my perspective that the Biden administration has failed to take adequate action to address the crisis at the southern border. Republicans have accused the administration of being too lenient on immigration, citing policies such as the proposed pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
