Hunter Biden’s Lawyers to Meet Prosecutor Weiss as Special Counsel Remains Unnamed by Garland
Hunter Biden's legal team is reportedly set to meet with U.S. prosecutor David Weiss and a Justice Department official after an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent alleged the improper politicization of a tax investigation into the president's son. Despite this, Attorney General Merrick Garland has yet to appoint a special counsel to the case.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has been investigating Hunter Biden for tax fraud, money laundering, and violation of lobbying laws since May 2019. Federal prosecutors, led by Weiss, allegedly considered charging Hunter for three tax crimes and one gun crime over a year ago.
Although Hunter has not been indicted, sources familiar with the investigation have said that prosecutors could still bring charges against him. In the coming days, the case will be discussed between the DOJ, Weiss, and Hunter’s attorney, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CNN. It appears that Hunter's lawyers requested the meeting.
On Wednesday, an IRS whistleblower claimed that two political appointees within the DOJ, who serve under the Biden administration, are blocking charges against Hunter for tax violations against recommendations. The whistleblower also alleges that Garland refused to name a special counsel in the probe to provide a degree of separation between the investigation and President Joe Biden.
The investigation into Hunter could implicate Joe Biden. A witness who testified before the jury was reportedly asked to identify the “big guy.” Garland insists Weiss has the authority to bring charges against Hunter, but he has noted that he would personally have to authorize any potential charges against Hunter.
According to Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Garland and Biden could be held responsible for the alleged abuses. Johnson told Breitbart News, “Under President Biden and Attorney General Garland, America is not equally applying Justice and the rule of law. They are both equally culpable and responsible for abuse alleged by the IRS whistleblower.”
The meeting between Hunter's legal team and DOJ officials is seen as a significant development in the investigation. It could provide insight into whether the DOJ plans to bring charges against Hunter and, if so, what those charges might be.
While Garland has refused to appoint a special counsel, he has also said that he will not interfere with any investigations or prosecutions involving the president's family members. This statement indicates that Garland may be willing to allow the investigation into Hunter to proceed without political interference.
The IRS whistleblower's allegations have raised concerns about potential political interference in the investigation. If political appointees are blocking charges against Hunter, it could undermine public trust in the DOJ's ability to conduct impartial investigations and uphold the rule of law.
The investigation into Hunter's financial dealings has been ongoing for over two years, and it remains unclear when or if charges will be brought against him. However, the meeting between Hunter's lawyers and DOJ officials could be a critical turning point in the case.
Regardless of the outcome, the investigation into Hunter has highlighted the potential conflicts of interest that can arise when family members of high-ranking politicians engage in business dealings. It has also raised concerns about the politicization of the DOJ and the need for impartial and independent investigations into potential wrongdoing.
